As members of the Charlotte Area Independent Schools (CAIS) assessment team, Jennifer McConnell and Heidi Limbrunner provide cognitive evaluations that support the admissions process for local independent schools.
Testing Overview
Students complete standardized cognitive assessments designed to help determine their school readiness and overall learning potential.
For Rising JK/TK, Kindergarten, and 1st Grade Applicants
Children in these groups are given the Wechsler Preschool & Primary Scale of Intelligence—Fourth Edition (WPPSI-IV). This one-on-one assessment typically takes 45–60 minutes.Please ensure your child is at least four years old on the day of testing.
For Rising 2nd, 3rd, and 4th Grade Applicants
Students applying to these grades are administered the Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children—Fifth Edition (WISC-V). These sessions usually last 60–90 minutes.
Scheduling Information
Scheduling for CAIS admissions testing opens the day after Labor Day (September 8th, 2026). Appointments may not be scheduled before the official opening of the scheduling period.
CAIS Testing Deadlines
TK/JK/K: Testing must be completed by February 1, 2027
Grades 1–4: Testing must be completed by February 26, 2027
Application Deadlines
TK/JK/K Applications: Due January 2, 2027
Grades 1–4 Applications: Due January 15, 2027
Testing may take place after an application is submitted, as long as it meets the CAIS testing deadline.
Fees and Payment
The fee for CAIS testing is $300, which includes administration of the assessment and electronic delivery of results to both families and the selected schools.
Payment is required within 24 hours after scheduling.
Families who prefer to pay by check should make arrangements with the psychologist in advance. A one-week payment period may be provided for check payments.
Payments for appointments scheduled after January 1st are nonrefundable.
Families seeking financial assistance with testing fees should contact the admissions staff at the CAIS schools to which the child is applying.
Cancellation and Rescheduling Policies
Emergencies or Illness
If a sudden illness or family emergency occurs, please contact our office as soon as possible. We will reschedule your appointment at no charge.
Rescheduling with Advance Notice
You may reschedule for any reason as long as you notify us at least 72 hours beforehand. There is no rescheduling fee.For Monday appointments, notice must be given by the prior Wednesday.
Cancellations and Refunds
After payment is made, a $100 nonrefundable fee applies to all cancellations.Per CAIS policy, cancellations within 72 hours of the appointment are not eligible for a refund.
Unforeseen Situations
If something unexpected occurs within 72 hours of your appointment, please reach out to discuss possible options for rescheduling.

A parent-only feedback session is available for families seeking a deeper understanding of their child’s results and how they may relate to school placement or learning needs.
